Cyprus, the large Mediterranean island south of Asia Minor, important as a base for early Christian mission.
Cyprus (Greek Kypros) is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, lying just south of the coast of modern Turkey. Famous in antiquity as a source of copper — the Latin cyprium gave us the English word — Cyprus became strategically important for the early church. Barnabas was a native Cypriot (Acts 4:36), and the island served as the first stop on his missionary journey with Paul (Acts 13:4). All five NT references occur in Acts, tracing the spread of the gospel through this crossroads of the ancient world.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Cyprus — the large Greek island in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Asia Minor. In Acts it functions as a key waypoint for early Christian mission: believers scattered by persecution brought the gospel there (Acts 11:19), Paul and Barnabas launched their first journey from its shores (Acts 13:4), and Barnabas later returned with Mark (Acts 15:39). The translational evidence (spa: Chipre, fra: Chypre, deu: Kypros) consistently treats it as a proper geographical name with no semantic variation across occurrences. 5×
