Mat, pallet, stretcher — a portable sleeping mat or simple bed, prominent in healing narratives
The noun κράβαττος (krabattos) designates a poor person's sleeping mat or pallet — a simple, lightweight bed that could be rolled up and carried. It features prominently in healing stories where the restored person is commanded to rise and carry the very mat that had confined them. The paralytic lowered through the roof at Capernaum takes up his krabattos at Jesus' word (Mark 2:4-12), and the invalid at Bethesda does the same after thirty-eight years (John 5:8-11). In Acts, the sick are laid on pallets in the streets hoping Peter's shadow might fall on them (Acts 5:15; 9:33). The word is colloquial, possibly of Macedonian origin, and contrasts with the more refined κλίνη. Spanish 'camilla/lecho' and French 'grabat' reflect its humble connotation.

Senses
1. mat, pallet, bed A portable sleeping mat or simple pallet used by the poor and the sick, frequently appearing as the object carried away by a healed person as visible proof of restoration. The paralytic at Capernaum rises and carries his mat (Mark 2:4, 9, 11-12), the Bethesda invalid is told 'take up your pallet and walk' (John 5:8-11), and Aeneas at Lydda rises from his pallet after eight years of paralysis (Acts 9:33-34). The mat itself becomes a sign of the miracle — what once carried the sick is now carried by the healed. Spanish 'camilla' and French 'grabat' both connote humble bedding. 11×
