kophinos -- a stiff wicker basket, specifically associated with Jewish use and the feeding miracles
Kophinos denotes a particular type of basket -- a stiff, woven container that ancient sources specifically associate with Jewish daily life. Juvenal mocked Jews as people whose 'furniture is a kophinos and a bundle of hay.' In the New Testament, all six occurrences refer to the twelve baskets of fragments collected after Jesus fed the five thousand (Matt 14:20; 16:9; Mark 6:43; 8:19; Luke 9:17; John 6:13). The Gospel writers carefully distinguish kophinos from spuris (the larger basket of the four-thousand feeding), and Jesus himself draws on this distinction in Matt 16:9-10. Spanish canasta/cesta, French corbeille, and German Korb render it straightforwardly as 'basket.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — A stiff wicker basket of moderate size, distinctly associated in ancient literature with Jewish usage and in the NT exclusively with the twelve baskets of leftover fragments from the feeding of the five thousand (Matt 14:20; Mark 6:43; Luke 9:17; John 6:13). The Gospels intentionally contrast kophinos with the larger spuris used in the feeding of the four thousand, and Jesus highlights this distinction when testing the disciples' memory in Matt 16:9-10 and Mark 8:19-20. Spanish cestas, French corbeille, and German Koerbe all render it simply as 'baskets,' though the original Greek preserves a specific typological nuance. 6×
