Corinthians, inhabitants or natives of Corinth
This adjective (used substantively) refers to the people of Corinth, the major commercial city in Achaia. In Acts 18:8, many of the Corinthians (Κορινθίων) hearing Paul believed and were baptized, including Crispus the synagogue ruler. In 2 Corinthians 6:11, Paul addresses his readers directly: 'Our mouth is open to you, Corinthians (Κορίνθιοι); our heart is wide.' The term simply designates ethnic or civic identity—those from or living in Corinth. Given Corinth's reputation for immorality and commercialism, being 'Corinthian' carried cultural connotations, but the word itself is a neutral ethnic designation.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Acts 18:8 describes 'many of the Corinthians' (πολλοὶ τῶν Κορινθίων) believing and being baptized during Paul's initial mission. Second Corinthians 6:11 has Paul's direct address: 'Corinthians' (Κορίνθιοι), our heart is wide open to you. The multilingual glosses are simple ethnic designations: English 'Corinthians/Korinthioi,' Spanish 'Korinthioi/corintios,' French 'Corinthien,' German 'Korinther/Κορινθίων.' The vocative in 2 Cor is unusual, marking emotional directness in Paul's appeal. 2×
