Κενχρεαί G2747
Cenchreae, the eastern port of Corinth
Cenchreae (or Kenchreai) was one of Corinth's two ports, located on the Saronic Gulf about seven miles east of the city. It served as the harbor for trade with Asia and the eastern Mediterranean. Paul had his hair cut here in fulfillment of a vow (Acts 18:18), and the church there was served by Phoebe, whom Paul commends as a deacon in Romans 16:1. As a proper name, the word itself carries no intrinsic meaning beyond geographical reference, though its association with Paul's ministry and early Christian communities gives it historical significance.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The two references (Acts 18:18, Rom 16:1) locate Paul's ministry activity in this port city. Acts mentions his vow-related haircut there, while Romans introduces Phoebe as a servant of the church in Cenchreae. The multilingual glosses are transliterations with slight orthographic variation: 'Kenchreai' in English, 'Cencreas/Kenchreaís' in Spanish, 'Cenchrées' in French, 'Kenchreae/Κενχρεαῖς' in German. All preserve the proper name rather than attempting translation. 2×
