καταπέτασμα G2665
Curtain, veil; specifically the inner veil of the Temple separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
Katapetasma refers to a curtain or veil, and in the NT it denotes specifically the great veil of the Jerusalem Temple. All three Synoptic Gospels record that this veil was torn in two from top to bottom at the moment of Jesus' death (Matt 27:51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45), a dramatic sign that access to God's presence was now opened. The letter to the Hebrews develops this theologically: Jesus has entered 'within the veil' as a forerunner on our behalf (Heb 6:19), and the author explains the significance of both the outer and inner curtains of the tabernacle (Heb 9:3; 10:20). German 'Vorhang' (hanging-before) nicely captures the spatial sense of something hung as a barrier.
Senses
1. curtain — The curtain or veil of the Temple -- specifically the inner veil (distinguished from the outer covering, to kalumma) that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place where God's presence dwelt. The Synoptic accounts of the crucifixion all report its tearing from top to bottom (Matt 27:51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45), signifying open access to God. Hebrews interprets this typologically: Jesus as high priest has passed through the veil (Heb 6:19; 9:3; 10:20). Spanish 'velo' and French 'voile' preserve the sense of a fabric barrier, while the theological weight comes from what it concealed and what its tearing revealed. 6×
