N-DMS  |  5× in 1 sense
Rule, standard, measure; a norm or principle by which something is evaluated or a defined sphere of activity.
Originally a straight rod or measuring stick used by builders, this noun came to mean a 'rule' or 'standard' of measurement. Paul uses it in 2 Corinthians 10:13-16 to define his God-given 'sphere' or 'field' of ministry, insisting he does not boast beyond the measure assigned to him. In Gal 6:16, it denotes the 'rule' or guiding principle by which believers should walk. Phil 3:16 similarly calls for living according to the same 'standard.' The Spanish 'regla' and French 'regle' directly echo the Latin 'regula,' from which English 'rule' itself derives.

Senses
1. sense 1 A rule, standard, or measuring rod—used figuratively for a norm of conduct or a defined sphere of activity. Paul uses it to denote the bounds of his apostolic territory, the 'measure' God assigned him (2 Cor 10:13, 15-16), and as a guiding principle for Christian living (Gal 6:16; Phil 3:16). The word's etymology from a carpenter's straight-edge underlies its metaphorical force. Spanish 'regla,' French 'regle,' and German 'Richtschnur' (lit. 'guideline') all preserve the imagery of a standard for measurement and conduct.
