Iconium; an ancient city in the province of Galatia, an important stop on Paul's missionary journeys.
The name of a major city in the Roman province of Galatia (modern Konya, Turkey), appearing in Acts as a key location on Paul's first missionary journey. Paul and Barnabas arrived there after being driven from Pisidian Antioch (Acts 13:51), preached with great effect in the synagogue (Acts 14:1), but eventually fled persecution to Lystra and Derbe (Acts 14:19, 21). Timothy's good reputation in that region is noted in Acts 16:2, and Paul later recalls his sufferings at Iconium in 2 Tim 3:11. The Spanish 'Iconio' represents the standard Latinized form of the name.
