N-AFS  |  7× in 1 sense
Jericho; the ancient fortified city near the Jordan River, prominent in both OT conquest and NT Gospel narratives.
Ierichou is the indeclinable Greek form of Hebrew Yericho, the ancient city in the lower Jordan Valley. In the OT it is the first city conquered after the Exodus (Josh 6), and Hebrews 11:30 recalls its walls falling by faith. In the Gospels, Jericho sits on Jesus's final road to Jerusalem: there he heals blind Bartimaeus (Matt 20:29; Mark 10:46; Luke 18:35), encounters Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1), and sets the Good Samaritan parable on the dangerous Jericho road (Luke 10:30). Spanish Jericó and French Jéricho reflect the city's enduring familiarity.

Senses
1. Jericho (city) Jericho—the historic walled city near the Jordan River and the Dead Sea, situated about 250 meters below sea level. All seven NT occurrences cluster around two themes: Jesus's ministry on the road to Jerusalem and the faith chapter of Hebrews. The Synoptic Gospels place the healing of the blind (Matt 20:29; Mark 10:46; Luke 18:35) and Zacchaeus's conversion (Luke 19:1) at Jericho, while the Good Samaritan descends 'from Jerusalem to Jericho' (Luke 10:30). Hebrews 11:30 recalls the conquest walls. Spanish Jericó and German Jericho maintain the familiar proper name across languages.
