The proper name of the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, modern Thessaloniki. It was a thriving port city on the Via Egnatia where Paul founded a church during his second missionary journey. The city appears at pivotal moments: the founding of the congregation (Acts 17:1), the Bereans' contrasting response (Acts 17:11), opposition that pursued Paul to Berea (Acts 17:13), the Philippians' generosity sent to Paul while he was there (Phil 4:16), and Demas's departure to Thessalonica (2 Tim 4:10).
