θαυμ-αστός G2298
Marvelous, wonderful, astonishing; describes what evokes awe, whether God's works, his ways, or surprising events.
An adjective reserved almost entirely for things that provoke wonder at God's action. When Jesus quotes Psalm 118 -- 'this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes' (Matt 21:42; Mark 12:11) -- the word captures the astonishment of divine reversal. Peter uses it for God's 'marvelous light' into which believers are called (1 Pet 2:9), and Revelation applies it to God's 'great and marvelous' works and plagues (Rev 15:1, 3). In John 9:30 the healed blind man finds it 'amazing' that the Pharisees cannot see what God has done. Spanish 'maravillosa/asombroso' and French 'admirable' consistently mark the sense of divine wonder.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Marvelous, wonderful -- describing God's acts, works, or character that provoke reverent awe. The rejected stone becomes the cornerstone, and 'it is marvelous in our eyes' (Matt 21:42; Mark 12:11). Believers are called into God's 'marvelous light' (1 Pet 2:9). Revelation 15:1, 3 uses it for God's great and wonderful signs and works. Spanish 'maravillosa/maravillosas' and French 'admirable' uniformly convey sacred wonder. (Mark 12:11; 1 Pet 2:9; Rev 15:1, 3; Matt 21:42) 4×

2. sense 2 — Amazing, astonishing -- expressing surprise or incredulity at an unexpected turn of events. The man born blind declares it 'amazing' that the Pharisees do not know where Jesus comes from despite the miracle (John 9:30). Spanish 'asombroso' and English 'amazing' both highlight the element of bewildered surprise rather than reverent awe. (John 9:30) 1×
