N-AMS  |  6× in 3 senses
Yoke -- a wooden crossbar for draft animals, extended to burdens of obligation, servitude, or a pair of balance scales.
In the ancient world, the zygon was the familiar wooden frame binding oxen to a plow, and it became one of Scripture's most potent metaphors. Jesus invites the weary to take his yoke, promising it is easy and light (Matt 11:29-30) -- a deliberate contrast with the heavy yoke of legalistic burden the apostles refuse to impose (Acts 15:10). Paul warns against returning to a 'yoke of slavery' (Gal 5:1), and slaves are told to honor masters under the yoke (1 Tim 6:1). In Revelation 6:5 the word shifts to a pair of balance scales held by the third horseman, signaling famine and economic judgment. Spanish 'yugo/balanza' and French 'joug' preserve this dual range.

Senses
1. sense 1 A yoke of obligation, servitude, or discipleship -- the metaphorical burden placed on someone's neck. Jesus offers his gentle yoke (Matt 11:29-30); the Jerusalem council rejects burdening Gentiles with an unbearable yoke (Acts 15:10); slaves serve under the yoke (1 Tim 6:1). Across languages -- Spanish 'yugo,' French 'joug,' German 'Joch' -- the metaphor of imposed authority is universally understood. (Matt 11:29-30; Acts 15:10; 1 Tim 6:1)

2. sense 2 A pair of balance scales -- the crossbar from which pans hang for weighing. In Revelation 6:5 the third horseman holds a zygon, announcing grain prices during famine. English 'a scale' and Spanish 'balanza' distinguish this commercial-measurement sense from the servitude metaphor. (Rev 6:5)

3. sense 3 The yoke of slavery from which Christ has set believers free -- a specifically liberative use. In Galatians 5:1 Paul warns against submitting again to a 'yoke of bondage,' where Spanish 'en yugo' and English 'in yoke' emphasize the re-enslavement danger. This is closely related to sense 1 but carries the distinctive Pauline theology of freedom in Christ. (Gal 5:1)
