Ἔφεσος G2181
Ephesus — a major city of the Roman province of Asia, center of early Christian mission and Artemis worship
Ephesos was the leading city of proconsular Asia, a bustling port and commercial hub famous for its temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. In Acts, Paul visits Ephesus on his second journey (18:19-21), then spends over two years there on his third (19:1-41), triggering a riot among silversmiths who feared for their trade in Artemis shrines. The city became a major center of the Pauline mission: Paul wrote 1 Corinthians from Ephesus (1 Cor 16:8), addressed a letter to the Ephesian church (Eph 1:1), left Timothy there to oversee the community (1 Tim 1:3), and it appears as the first of the seven churches in Revelation (Rev 2:1). Spanish 'Efeso,' French 'Ephese,' and German 'Ephesus' all transliterate the name directly.
