Senses
1. good pleasure, gracious will, delight — The good pleasure, gracious will, or sovereign delight of God (or of a person); denotes the benevolent purpose or favorable disposition that motivates an action. Used predominantly of God's sovereign good pleasure: the Father's good pleasure in revealing truth to babes (Matt 11:26; Luke 10:21), God predestining believers according to the good pleasure of his will (Eph 1:5, 9), God working in believers both to will and to work for his good pleasure (Phil 2:13), God fulfilling every good pleasure of goodness (2 Thess 1:11), and the angels' proclamation of peace on earth to those of God's good will (Luke 2:14). Also used of human goodwill toward Christ (Phil 1:15) and Paul's heart's desire for Israel's salvation (Rom 10:1). Multilingual glosses converge on benevolent will/pleasure: arb: مسرة/رغبة/رضا (pleasure/desire/favor), deu: Wohlgefallen (good pleasure), fra: bienveillance (benevolence), heb: רצון (pleasure/will/favor), hin: प्रसन्नता/इच्छा (pleasure/desire), kor: 기쁘신 뜻/기뻐하심/소원 (good will/pleasure/desire), spa: buena voluntad/agrado (good will/favor). All five clusters represent the same fundamental concept of favorable, benevolent purpose — the variation between 'good pleasure,' 'goodwill,' 'well-pleasing,' and 'desire' reflects contextual nuance rather than distinct lexical senses. 9×
