A noun denoting interpersonal discord, rivalry, and quarrelsome contention. Paul consistently places it in vice lists alongside jealousy, anger, and selfish ambition — the toxic cluster of behaviors that fracture community. It appears in Romans 1:29 among the sins of a darkened mind, in 1 Corinthians 1:11 and 3:3 as evidence of the Corinthians' immaturity, and in Galatians 5:20 among the works of the flesh. Spanish 'contienda' and German 'Streit' both emphasize the combative, disputatious quality. This is not mere disagreement but the poisonous spirit of faction.
