1. search, examine, investigate — To search out, examine carefully, or investigate thoroughly; used of deep, probing inquiry into hidden or complex matters. Used of God/the Spirit searching hearts (Rom 8:27) and all things including the depths of God (1 Cor 2:10), of Christ searching minds and hearts (Rev 2:23), of the Pharisees challenging Nicodemus to search the Scriptures for proof that no prophet arises from Galilee (John 7:52), of Jesus telling the Jews 'you search the Scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life' (John 5:39), and of the OT prophets searching carefully into the salvation and the sufferings of Christ foretold by the Spirit (1 Pet 1:11).
