to refute thoroughly, convict completely; to prove someone wrong beyond doubt
An intensified form of the verb 'to convict,' this word means to refute someone utterly or prove them wrong in public debate. Classical authors use it for exposing someone's errors before the assembly or demonstrating guilt. It can take a double accusative (the person and the charge), as in 'convicting someone of being unable.' The passive voice appears in contexts of being proven guilty or exposed as wrongdoers. The strengthening prefix ἐξ- adds force: not just correction but thorough, public refutation.
