V-AIA-3S  |  5× in 1 sense
To dwell in, inhabit; used metaphorically of God's Spirit, Christ's word, or faith residing within a person or community.
Carries the core meaning of dwelling or making one's home within a place or person. In the New Testament, this verb is used exclusively in a spiritual and metaphorical sense: the Spirit of God dwelling in believers (Rom 8:11), God dwelling among his people (2 Cor 6:16), the word of Christ dwelling richly in the community (Col 3:16), and sincere faith dwelling first in a grandmother and mother before being passed on (2 Tim 1:5, 14). Spanish habitare and French habiter-dans mirror the "inhabit within" nuance perfectly.

Senses
1. sense 1 To dwell within, inhabit spiritually. Every NT use is metaphorical -- God's Spirit indwelling the believer (Rom 8:11), God dwelling among his covenant people (2 Cor 6:16), the word of Christ making its home in the congregation (Col 3:16), and genuine faith residing within Timothy's lineage (2 Tim 1:5, 14). The German einwohnen ('to in-dwell') captures the compound prefix en- plus oikeō ('to dwell'), emphasizing an interior, abiding presence rather than a temporary visit.
