Prep  |  26× in 1 sense
on account of, for the sake of, because of — a causal preposition expressing reason or purpose
Heneka (also heneken) is a preposition with the genitive that expresses the cause, reason, or purpose behind an action. Classical Greek already used it freely; in the New Testament its 26 occurrences cluster strikingly around the theme of suffering for Christ's sake. Jesus pronounces blessing on those persecuted 'on account of righteousness' and 'on my account' (Matt 5:10-11), and promises that whoever loses his life 'for my sake' will find it (Matt 10:39; 16:25; Mark 8:35). The Olivet Discourse warns that disciples will be brought before governors and kings 'for my sake, as a testimony to them' (Matt 10:18; Mark 13:9; Luke 21:12). Paul echoes the pattern: 'for your sake we are being killed all day long' (Rom 8:36). The preposition thus becomes almost a technical marker for the cost of discipleship. Spanish 'por causa de' and French 'a cause de' both render the causal force directly.

Senses
1. on account of, for the sake of A causal preposition meaning 'on account of, for the sake of, because of,' expressing the motivating reason or ultimate purpose behind an action. In the NT it overwhelmingly marks the cost of discipleship: blessings pronounced on those persecuted 'for my sake' (Matt 5:10-11), the paradox of losing and finding life 'for my sake' (Matt 10:39; 16:25; Mark 8:35), and trials before authorities 'on my account' (Matt 10:18; Luke 21:12). Spanish 'por causa de' and German 'wegen' converge on the same straightforward causal sense. 26×
