ἔμφοβ-ος G1719
Frightened, terrified, struck with fear; describing a state of alarm or dread at a supernatural or overwhelming event.
An adjective describing the state of being gripped by fear, nearly always in response to a divine or supernatural encounter. The women at the empty tomb become terrified before the angelic messengers (Luke 24:5), the disciples are frightened when Jesus appears among them (Luke 24:37), Cornelius stares in fear at the angel who visits him (Acts 10:4), and Felix becomes alarmed as Paul reasons about judgment (Acts 24:25). In Revelation 11:13, survivors of the earthquake become 'terrified' and give glory to God. French 'effrayé' and Spanish 'atemorizado' convey this overwhelming dread.
Senses
1. sense 1 — In a state of terror or alarm, typically provoked by a divine or supernatural manifestation. Luke 24:5 and 24:37 describe the fear of those confronting resurrection appearances—the women at the tomb and the disciples in the upper room. Acts 10:4 captures Cornelius' fright at seeing an angel, and Acts 24:25 extends the term to Felix's alarm at Paul's preaching on righteousness and coming judgment. Revelation 11:13 applies it to earthquake survivors who give glory to God out of terror. Spanish 'atemorizado,' French 'effrayé,' and German 'erschrocken' all emphasize sudden, overwhelming fright. 5×
