Greek, Hellene

Senses
1. Greek, Hellene A person of Greek/Hellenic identity or culture, used broadly in the NT to denote non-Jews (Gentiles) in contrast to Ioudaioi. All 25 occurrences across the four auto-clusters share identical semantic content: the only variation is grammatical number and case (singular Hellen in Gal 2:3, 3:28, Col 3:11, Acts 16:1,3; plural Hellenes/Hellesin in Acts 14:1, 17:4, 18:4, 19:10,17, 20:21, 21:28; Rom 1:14,16, 2:9-10, 3:9, 10:12; 1 Cor 1:22,24, 10:32, 12:13; John 7:35, 12:20). Cross-linguistically uniform: Arabic yunaniyin, German Grieche, French Grec, Hebrew yevanim/yevani, Hindi yunaniyom, Korean hellain, Spanish griego/griegos. The English glosses 'Greek' vs 'Hellenes' are mere transliteration choices, not different senses. No polysemy is present. 25×
