εἶδος G1491
Form, appearance, visible shape; outward aspect or kind of something perceived
Refers to the outward visible form or appearance of something. At Jesus' baptism, the Spirit descends in bodily 'form' like a dove (Luke 3:22), and during the Transfiguration the 'appearance' of his face changes (Luke 9:29). Jesus tells the crowds they have never seen the Father's 'form' (John 5:37). Paul contrasts walking 'by faith, not by sight' -- literally 'not by appearance' (2 Cor 5:7). In 1 Thessalonians 5:22, believers are told to avoid every 'form' (or kind) of evil. The multilingual spread -- Spanish 'apariencia/forma,' French 'aspect/forme,' German 'Gestalt' -- reflects this dual sense of visible shape and categorical kind.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The visible form, shape, or appearance of something as perceived by the senses; by extension, a kind or category of something. The Spirit appears in bodily 'form' as a dove (Luke 3:22), and Jesus' facial 'appearance' changes at the Transfiguration (Luke 9:29). German 'Gestalt' (shape, figure) captures the concreteness, while Spanish 'apariencia' and French 'aspect' emphasize the perceived quality. In 2 Corinthians 5:7, the word sets up the faith-versus-sight contrast -- walking not by what is visually apparent. In 1 Thessalonians 5:22, it may mean every 'kind' or 'form' of evil, extending from visual appearance to categorical type. 5×
