particle giving emphasis: at least, at any rate, indeed; often only rendered by vocal stress
An enclitic particle that adds emphasis to the word or words it follows. Often it can only be captured in writing through italics or in speech through vocal stress, as it doesn't always translate to a specific English word. It can mean 'at least,' 'at any rate,' 'indeed,' or 'for my part,' depending on context. With pronouns it emphasizes personal involvement or distinction ('I at least,' 'you on your part'). In negative contexts it intensifies the negation ('not even,' 'not the least'). The particle appears more frequently in Attic prose than in Homer, and its Doric form is γα. It serves primarily to highlight or emphasize specific elements within a sentence.
