δόγμα G1378
A decree, ordinance, or official edict; also a doctrinal regulation or legal stipulation
Covers both civic edicts and religious ordinances. Caesar Augustus issues a 'decree' that all the world should be enrolled (Luke 2:1), and the Thessalonian Jews accuse Paul of acting against Caesar's 'decrees' (Acts 17:7). Yet the same word also describes the apostolic decisions delivered to churches (Acts 16:4) and the Jewish legal ordinances that Christ abolished in his flesh (Eph 2:15; Col 2:14). The breadth is captured across languages: Spanish uses both 'decreto' and 'ordenanzas,' French 'décret,' and German 'Satzung' (statute).
Senses
1. sense 1 — A formal decree, ordinance, or regulation issued by an authority -- whether imperial, apostolic, or religious. The range spans Caesar's census decree (Luke 2:1), the apostolic council's decisions (Acts 16:4), and the written code of Jewish legal regulations (Eph 2:15; Col 2:14). Spanish distinguishes 'decreto' for imperial edicts from 'ordenanzas' for religious statutes, while German 'Satzung' emphasizes the binding, statutory character. In Colossians 2:14, the 'ordinances' are metaphorically nailed to the cross, signifying their cancellation. 5×
