Teaching, instruction, doctrine; the act or content of authoritative instruction in the church.
Covers both the activity of teaching and the body of doctrine taught. Jesus warns against human commandments masquerading as divine 'teaching' (Matt 15:9 = Mark 7:7, quoting Isa 29:13). Paul uses the term for sound doctrinal instruction that builds up the church (Rom 12:7; 1 Tim 4:13, 16; 2 Tim 3:16) and contrasts it sharply with the 'teachings of demons' that lead astray (1 Tim 4:1). The Pastoral Epistles are especially dense with this word, reflecting their concern for doctrinal fidelity. French 'enseignement' and German 'Lehre' both preserve the dual sense of teaching-as-act and teaching-as-content.
