V-AIA-1P  |  9× in 1 sense
To stay, remain, or spend time in a place; to sojourn or tarry.
In classical Greek this verb originally meant 'to rub hard' or 'wear away,' but by the Hellenistic period it had shifted entirely to 'spend time' or 'stay in a place.' Every NT occurrence appears in John or Acts, always describing someone remaining or sojourning somewhere for a period. Jesus stays with his disciples in the Judean countryside (John 3:22), Paul and Barnabas remain at Antioch (Acts 14:28; 15:35), and Herod withdraws to Caesarea (Acts 12:19). The Spanish 'permaneciendo' and French 'séjourner' both highlight the extended, settled quality of the stay.

Senses
1. stay, remain, spend time To stay, remain, or spend time in a place, typically for an extended period. The classical sense of 'rubbing away' or 'consuming time' has fully evolved into a locational meaning in the NT. All nine occurrences are in John and Acts: Jesus sojourning in Judea (John 3:22), Paul and Barnabas staying at various cities during missionary journeys (Acts 14:3, 14:28, 15:35, 16:12, 20:6, 25:6, 25:14). Spanish 'permaneciendo' ('remaining') and French 'séjourner' ('to sojourn') both emphasize the settled, unhurried character of this staying.
