διαμένω G1265
To remain throughout, continue, persist; of persons enduring or states persisting unchanged over time.
A compound of dia ('through') and menō ('remain'), intensifying the idea of staying power and continuity. Zechariah 'remained' unable to speak after his temple vision (Luke 1:22). Jesus commends his disciples as those who have 'continued with' him through his trials (Luke 22:28). Paul insists on standing firm so that the truth of the gospel might 'continue' with the Galatians (Gal 2:5). The heavens will perish, but God 'continues' unchanged (Heb 1:11). Scoffers mock by noting that all things 'continue' as they were from creation (2 Pet 3:4). Spanish 'permanecer' and German 'bleiben' both capture this core sense of persistent remaining.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To remain, continue, or persist through time — an intensified form of menō emphasizing duration and constancy. Applied to persons remaining in a state (Luke 1:22, Zechariah continuing mute; Luke 22:28, the disciples persevering through trials with Jesus), to the permanence of divine truth (Gal 2:5, the gospel continuing intact), to God's eternal unchangeableness contrasted with creation's decay (Heb 1:11, quoting Psalm 102), and ironically to the uniformitarian argument of scoffers (2 Pet 3:4, 'all things continue as they were'). The dia- prefix adds a sense of thoroughness — remaining all the way through. 5×
