second-first Sabbath (probably a textual corruption in the New Testament)
A puzzling compound phrase appearing in some New Testament manuscripts, literally meaning 'second-first Sabbath.' Lexicographers generally regard this as a textual corruption rather than a genuine Greek expression, since the combination of 'second' and 'first' creates an apparent contradiction. Various theories have attempted to explain what it might have originally meant—perhaps the first Sabbath after the second day of Passover, or the second Sabbath in some counting system that was also considered 'first' in another reckoning. Most modern textual critics consider it a scribal error.
