Decapolis, region of ten cities east and southeast of the Sea of Galilee
The Decapolis was a league of ten predominantly Greek cities (though the number varied) located primarily east of the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee. These Hellenistic cities enjoyed a degree of autonomy under Roman oversight and represented Greek culture and pagan religion in the midst of Jewish territory. Jesus' ministry occasionally extended into this Gentile region, and after the healing of the Gerasene demoniac, the man proclaimed Jesus throughout the Decapolis. The region provided a transitional zone between the Jewish heartland and the broader Gentile world.

Senses
1. sense 1 Matthew 4:25 notes that crowds followed Jesus from Decapolis among other regions. Mark 5:20 records that the healed demoniac 'began to proclaim in the Decapolis' how much Jesus had done for him. Mark 7:31 describes Jesus traveling 'through the region of the Decapolis.' The multilingual glosses preserve the Greek name—English/French/Spanish 'Decapolis/Décapole/Decápolis,' German 'Dekapolis'—reflecting this distinctive geographical-cultural designation. Jesus' ministry in this Gentile region foreshadows the gospel's eventual spread beyond Judaism.
