V-PMA-3S  |  1× in 1 sense
To be afraid, to fear, to be cowardly
To experience fear or timidity, to shrink back in cowardice. Jesus commands his disciples in John 14:27 not to let their hearts be troubled or afraid as he prepares to leave them. The verb expresses the emotional response of fear that Jesus deliberately counters with his gift of peace, distinguishing the peace he gives from the world's inadequate version.

Senses
1. sense 1 Describes becoming afraid or fearful. The translations (Spanish 'tenga miedo', French 'avoir peur', German 'furchtsam sein') all indicate fear as an emotional state. In John 14:27, Jesus's prohibition against fear accompanies his bequest of peace—a peace unlike the world's superficial version, rooted in his completed work and promised presence through the Spirit, designed to replace disciples' anxiety about his departure with confident trust in his ongoing care despite physical absence.
