γωνία G1137
A corner or angle of a building, street, or region; used architecturally of the cornerstone and spatially of street corners.
Denotes a corner or angle, whether of a building, a street intersection, or a geographic quarter. Its most theologically significant use is in the 'head of the corner' (kephale gonias) passages, where Jesus applies Psalm 118:22 to himself as the rejected stone that becomes the cornerstone (Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11; 1 Pet 2:7). In Matt 6:5, it describes the street corners where hypocrites pray to be seen. Spanish 'esquina' and French 'coin' both capture both the architectural and spatial senses neatly.
Senses
1. corner / angle — A corner or angle of a structure, street, or spatial region. The word carries two main NT applications under one semantic umbrella: the architectural cornerstone — the critical junction stone at the corner of a building, applied christologically in Matt 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, and 1 Pet 2:7 — and the street corner where people stand to pray ostentatiously (Matt 6:5) or where the four winds blow from (Rev 7:1; 20:8). Spanish distinguishes 'esquina' (external corner) from 'rincón' (internal nook), reflecting the word's spatial flexibility. 9×
