Βηθανία G0963
Bethany — village on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem; also a locale east of the Jordan where John baptized
Bēthania, from Aramaic bēth ʿanyā ('house of affliction' or 'house of dates'), identifies two distinct locations in the Gospels. The primary Bethany sits on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, roughly two miles from Jerusalem (John 11:18), and serves as Jesus' lodging place during his final week (Matt 21:17; Mark 11:11-12). This is the village of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus (John 11:1; 12:1), the site of the Ascension (Luke 24:50), and the setting for the anointing at Simon the leper's house (Matt 26:6; Mark 14:3). A second Bethany appears in John 1:28 as the place on the east bank of the Jordan where John was baptizing.
