N-NMP  |  12× in 1 sense
A wineskin — an animal-hide bag for storing and transporting wine, central to Jesus' parable of new wine in old skins.
An animal skin, typically goatskin, sewn and sealed to hold wine. All twelve NT occurrences appear in the famous parable of new wine and old wineskins, recorded in all three Synoptic Gospels (Matt 9:17; Mark 2:22; Luke 5:37-38). Jesus warns that new wine will burst old, brittle skins — the fermentation pressure splits them — so new wine must go into fresh wineskins. The image powerfully illustrates the incompatibility of the new covenant reality with rigid old structures. The word carries no metaphorical ambiguity in the text; it is a concrete household object serving a vivid theological illustration. Spanish 'odres' and French 'outre' both designate the same leather container.

Senses
1. wineskins A wineskin made from animal hide, used for storing and transporting wine. Every NT occurrence belongs to Jesus' parable about new wine requiring new wineskins (Matt 9:17 x4; Mark 2:22 x4; Luke 5:37-38 x4). Old, stiffened skins cannot withstand the pressure of fermenting new wine and will burst, so fresh skins are needed. The image serves as a metaphor for the incompatibility of new-covenant realities with obsolete religious forms. Spanish 'odres,' French 'outre,' and German 'Schlauch' all denote the same leather wine container familiar throughout the ancient Mediterranean world. 12×
