Asia — the Roman province in western Asia Minor, with Ephesus as its capital
In the NT this proper noun refers not to the modern continent but to the Roman province of Asia in western Asia Minor, centered on Ephesus. Paul was initially prevented from preaching there (Acts 16:6) but later spent years in Ephesus so that 'all who dwelt in Asia heard the word' (Acts 19:10). The seven churches of Revelation (Rev 1:4) are all located within this province. Asian Jews appear at Pentecost (Acts 2:9) and later accuse Paul in Jerusalem (Acts 21:27; 24:19). French 'Asie' and German 'Asien' retain the classical geographic reference.
