ἀριθμός G0706
Number — a count, total, or numerical quantity of persons or things
A straightforward noun denoting a numerical count or sum. In Acts it frequently quantifies the growth of the early church — 'the number of men came to about five thousand' (Acts 4:4) — and the size of various groups (Acts 5:36; 6:7; 11:21). Revelation uses it symbolically for the number of the beast (Rev 13:17-18) and the count of angelic hosts or the redeemed (Rev 5:11; 7:4; 9:16; 20:8). The word is remarkably stable across languages: Spanish 'número,' French 'nombre,' and German 'Zahl' all render it directly.
Senses
1. number — A number, count, or numerical quantity, whether literal or symbolic. In Acts it tracks the measurable growth of the believing community (Acts 4:4; 6:7; 11:21) and the size of movements (Acts 5:36). In Revelation it takes on symbolic force: the number of the beast (Rev 13:17-18), the 144,000 sealed (Rev 7:4), and the innumerable angelic hosts (Rev 5:11). John 6:10 uses it for the practical headcount of the five thousand fed by Jesus. 18×
