Ἀντιπατρίς G0494
Antipatris, a city between Joppa and Caesarea
Antipatris was a city rebuilt by Herod the Great and named for his father Antipater. Luke mentions it in Acts 23:31 as a stopping point when Paul was escorted from Jerusalem to Caesarea under military guard. Located about 35 miles from Jerusalem, it provided a safe overnight stop beyond the range of the Jewish conspiracy against Paul. The city sat on the main road between Joppa and Caesarea. All translation languages preserve recognizable forms of 'Antipatris,' showing consensus that this is a place name.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Place name of a city (Acts 23:31). Luke's narrative describes soldiers bringing Paul 'by night to Antipatris' as they transported him from Jerusalem to Caesarea. The city's location made it a strategic overnight stop—far enough from Jerusalem to be beyond immediate danger from Paul's would-be assassins. The multilingual preservation of the name with minimal phonetic variation confirms this as a geographic proper noun. This detail of Luke's travel narrative demonstrates his careful attention to geographic and historical accuracy. 1×
