Antioch — a city name referring either to Syrian Antioch or Pisidian Antioch
The proper noun Antiocheia designates two distinct cities in the NT. Syrian Antioch (modern Antakya, Turkey) served as the launching point of Paul's missionary journeys and the place where believers were first called 'Christians' (Acts 11:26). Pisidian Antioch in Asia Minor was a key stop on Paul's first journey, where he delivered a major synagogue address (Acts 13:14) and later faced persecution (Acts 14:19; 2 Tim 3:11). Paul's confrontation with Peter at Antioch (Gal 2:11) underscores Syrian Antioch's theological significance as the Gentile mission's home base.

Senses
1. Antiocheia The city of Antioch (Ἀντιόχεια), referring to either Syrian Antioch — the major metropolis where Gentile Christianity flourished and where believers were first called Christians (Acts 11:26) — or Pisidian Antioch in Asia Minor, a stop on Paul's first missionary journey (Acts 13:14; 14:19). Spanish 'Antioquía' and French 'Antioche' preserve the classical name across translation traditions. 18×
