N-AFP  |  1× in 1 sense
opposition, antithesis, contradiction
This noun denotes opposition, contradiction, or antithesis—the state of being set against. Paul uses it in 1 Timothy 6:20 warning Timothy to avoid 'the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge.' Classical usage included logical opposition, rhetorical antithesis, and contrary propositions. The compound (ἀντι-θεσις) literally means 'placement against.' Spanish 'oposiciones' (oppositions), French preservation of the Greek, and German 'Widerspruch' (contradiction) all indicate conflicting positions. This is not complementary contrast but contradictory opposition.

Senses
1. sense 1 Contradictions, opposing ideas (1 Tim 6:20). Paul warns against 'the contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge'—likely early gnostic teachings that set themselves against apostolic truth. The term was technical in rhetoric and logic for antithetical propositions. The multilingual evidence for 'oppositions/contradictions' shows these are not minor disagreements but fundamental contradictions to the gospel. Paul's concern is that such 'knowledge' (gnosis) leads people away from faith—its opposition to truth is not merely intellectual but spiritually destructive.
