1. sinner, sinful person — A person characterized by sin, either as a substantive noun ('a sinner') or attributive adjective ('sinful'). All auto-clusters represent inflectional variants (singular/plural, nominative/genitive/dative/accusative) and minor English gloss differences ('sinners,' 'sinner,' 'a sinner,' 'sinful') of the same core meaning. Used extensively in the Gospels for the social-religious category of those deemed unrighteous: tax collectors and sinners dining with Jesus (Matt 9:10-13; Mark 2:15-17; Luke 5:30-32), the sinful woman who anoints Jesus' feet (Luke 7:37-39), the Pharisee and the sinner parable (Luke 18:13), Zacchaeus (Luke 19:7), the man born blind debate (John 9:16,24-25), and in Pauline theology (Rom 3:7; 5:8,19; 7:13; Gal 2:15,17). Also in general epistles (Jas 5:20; 1 Pet 4:18; Heb 7:26). Cross-linguistically uniform: Arabic khatia/khutah (خَاطِئ/خُطَاة), German Suender, French pecheur, Korean joein (죄인), Hindi papi (पापी), Spanish pecador/pecadores. Hebrew equivalents hote (חוֹטֵא) and hattaim (חַטָּאִים). Mark 8:38 uses the adjective with 'generation' (sinful generation), and Luke 24:7 with 'men' (sinful men), but these are adjectival uses of the same lexeme, not a distinct sense. 47×
