Marketplace, public square — the open civic space for commerce, socializing, legal proceedings, and daily gathering
The ἀγορά (agora) was the commercial and civic heart of ancient towns, functioning as marketplace, meeting place, and informal courtroom all at once. Jesus compares his generation to children sitting in the marketplace calling to one another (Matt 11:16; Luke 7:32), and he rebukes the scribes and Pharisees who love greetings in the marketplaces (Matt 23:7; Mark 12:38; Luke 11:43). In Mark 6:56, the sick are laid in the marketplaces hoping for healing. The Pharisees' ritual washing of things 'from the marketplace' (Mark 7:4) reflects purity concerns about contact with Gentiles and unclean persons in that public space. Spanish 'plaza' and French 'place du marché' capture the dual commercial-civic character.

Senses
1. marketplace, public square The open public square in a Greco-Roman or Palestinian town serving as the center of commerce, socializing, and civic life. Jesus uses it as a setting for parables about childish fickleness (Matt 11:16; Luke 7:32), for exposing the Pharisees' love of public recognition (Matt 23:7; Mark 12:38; Luke 11:43, 20:46), and as a place where idle laborers wait for hire (Matt 20:3). The sick are brought to the agora for healing (Mark 6:56), and Pharisaic purity tradition requires washing after contact with the marketplace crowd (Mark 7:4). Spanish 'plaza' and German 'Marktplatz' both reflect this multipurpose civic space. 11×
