A contribution or offering set apart for sacred use; the portion lifted off or separated for God, the priests, or the sanctuary.
Terumah denotes something deliberately separated from the whole and elevated as a gift to God. In its broadest use it covers any voluntary contribution brought for sacred purposes — the gold, silver, and fabric donated for building the tabernacle (Exod 25:2-3), or agricultural firstfruits presented at the sanctuary (Deut 12:6). More technically, it refers to the priest's portion physically lifted from the sacrifice or harvest and set aside as their due (Exod 29:27-28). Spanish and French translations capture this elevation with 'ofrenda alzada' and 'offrande élevée,' while German 'Hebopfer' (heave-offering) preserves the ancient lifting gesture. In one unusual occurrence (Prov 29:4) it appears to mean exactions or bribes that drain a nation.
1. contribution, sacred offering The general sense of a voluntary contribution or sacred gift — anything separated from one's possessions and dedicated to God or the sanctuary. This is the dominant usage across the Pentateuch, where terumah covers the donations for the tabernacle (Exod 25:2; 35:5), agricultural firstfruits (Num 15:19-21), and the sacred land tract in Ezekiel's temple vision (Ezek 45:1). Spanish 'ofrenda alzada' and German 'Hebopfer' both echo the root idea of something lifted or raised up as a dedicated gift. 68×

2. heave-offering, priestly portion The technical priestly term for the portion physically elevated or separated from a sacrifice, harvest, or tithe and assigned to the priests as their rightful share. This heave-offering is distinguished in passages like Exod 29:27-28 and Num 18:8-11, where it stands alongside the wave-offering (tenufah). French 'élévation-offrande' and the German variant 'Hebeopfer' preserve the ritual gesture of lifting that marks this priestly allocation.

3. sense 3 A singular usage in Prov 29:4 where the word appears to denote forced exactions, bribes, or unjust levies — 'a man of terumot tears down the land.' English renders it 'bribes,' Spanish 'tributos.' The shift from sacred contribution to corrupt extraction may be ironic wordplay, applying the vocabulary of consecrated giving to its moral opposite.
