1. hem, skirt, train of a garment — The lower edge, hem, or skirt of a robe or garment, always in plural construct or with suffixes. Used of priestly vestments: the hems (shulei) of the ephod robe where bells and pomegranates are attached (Exod 28:33-34, 39:24-26). Used of the divine robe: God's train (shulav) filling the temple in Isaiah's vision (Isa 6:1). Used metaphorically of national/personal shame and exposure: 'your skirts' (shulayikh) being stripped or uncovered as a figure of disgrace and judgment against Jerusalem (Jer 13:22, 26) and Nineveh (Nah 3:5). Used of moral defilement: 'in her skirts' (be-shuleha) is the blood of the innocent found on Jerusalem's garments (Lam 1:9). Arabic uses adhyal (train/skirts) throughout; Korean uses dan (hem/border) for priestly garments but ot-ja-rak (garment-skirt) for metaphorical shame contexts; Spanish varies between bordes/dobladillos (hems) and faldas (skirts); Hindi uses ghere (border/hem) for priestly and daman (skirt/hem) for prophetic contexts. 11×
