prefect, official, ruler
1. prefect, official, ruler A governmental official or prefect, an Assyrian loanword (from Akkadian šaknu, 'one appointed') designating appointed administrators in a provincial hierarchy. Used frequently in Nehemiah (4:14,19; 5:7,17; 7:5; 12:40; 13:11) for the officials of post-exilic Judah alongside nobles (חֹרִים); in Jeremiah 51:23,28,57 for Babylonian provincial rulers; in Ezekiel 23:6,12,23 for Assyrian officials; in Isaiah 41:25 for rulers generally; and in Ezra 9:2 for officials complicit in intermarriage. German consistently translates Statthalter (governor); Arabic varies between السُّعَاة, الْوُلاة, and الرُّؤَسَاء reflecting different Arabic terms for officials; Korean uses 관원들/관리들 (officials); Spanish uses magistrados/oficiales/gobernantes. All morphological forms (with article, with conjunction, with preposition, with pronominal suffix) represent the same single sense. 17×
