Sight, appearance, or vision; the outward look of a person or thing, a prophetic visionary experience, or the act of seeing.
A Hebrew noun rooted in the verb ra'ah (to see), mar'eh spans the entire arc of visual experience. At its most common it describes outward appearance—how someone or something looks to the eye, as when Scripture notes the beauty of Sarah (Gen 12:11) or Rachel (Gen 29:17). In Ezekiel and Daniel it takes on prophetic weight, denoting the supernatural visions through which God discloses his purposes (Ezek 43:3). Less frequently it refers to the raw act or faculty of seeing itself, as in the disturbing 'sight of your eyes' in Deuteronomy 28:34. The Arabic cognate mar'a and the Korean hwansang for the visionary sense confirm how languages partition physical seeing from prophetic revelation.
1. appearance, outward form The outward visual form or look of a person, creature, or object—covering beauty, countenance, and general presentation. This is by far the dominant sense (83x), used of attractive women like Sarah and Rebekah, of the servant of the LORD whose appearance was marred (Isa 52:14), and of Daniel's healthy countenance (Dan 1:15). Spanish apariencia and German Angesicht align here, while the construct state mar'eh often functions attributively ('beautiful of appearance'). 83×

2. vision, prophetic sight A supernatural or prophetic visual revelation, concentrated in Ezekiel and Daniel. In Ezekiel 43:3 the prophet sees a vision like the one by the river Chebar; Numbers 8:4 describes the lampstand made 'according to the vision' shown to Moses. Arabic ru'ya and Korean hwansang capture this prophetic-visionary nuance, and Swahili maono likewise distinguishes revelatory sight from ordinary looking. The twelve occurrences cluster tightly in apocalyptic and priestly literature. 12×

3. sight, act of seeing The faculty or act of visual perception, or a spectacle beheld. In Exodus 3:3 Moses says 'let me turn aside and see this great sight'; Deuteronomy 28:34 warns of madness 'from the sight of your eyes.' This sense also includes being visible or in view. Nine occurrences carry this meaning, bridging the gap between the physical and the figurative—what one witnesses rather than how something looks.
