established dwelling place; foundation, established base
2. foundation, established base — The firm base or foundation upon which something stands, used metaphorically of the moral and cosmic order. In Ps 89:14 and 97:2 'righteousness and justice are the foundation of (מְכוֹן) his throne,' the word denotes the structural base undergirding divine rule. In Ps 104:5 the plural with suffix (מְכוֹנֶיהָ) refers to the earth's foundations. In Dan 8:11 'the place/foundation of his sanctuary' was cast down. German Grundfeste, Hindi नींव (foundation), Korean 기초 (foundation), and Arabic أَساس (foundation) confirm the structural-base meaning distinct from the dwelling-place sense. 3×

1. established dwelling place — A fixed, established place prepared as a habitation, especially God's heavenly or earthly dwelling. Used of the sanctuary as the place God has established for dwelling (Exod 15:17 'the place of your dwelling'), Solomon's temple (1 Kgs 8:13, 39, 43, 49; 2 Chr 6:2, 30, 33, 39), God's heavenly abode from which he looks down (Ps 33:14), and God's resting place in Zion (Isa 4:5). In Isa 18:4 God says 'in my dwelling place' (בִמְכוֹנִי). Also used of the temple's foundation site (2 Chr 6:2; Ezra 2:68). Glosses converge on 'place/Ort/lieu/स्थान/장소/مَكَان' across all target languages, confirming the spatial-habitation meaning. 14×
