1. strife, contention — Strife, contention, or quarreling, used almost exclusively in wisdom and prophetic literature. Predominant in Proverbs as a recurring theme in sapiential instruction: a hot-tempered person stirs up strife (Prov 15:18; 29:22), the beginning of strife is like releasing water (Prov 17:14), casting out a scoffer removes contention (Prov 22:10), a quarrelsome person kindles strife (Prov 26:20-21), and an angry person stirs up contention (Prov 28:25). The plural form מִדְיָנִים (qere/ketiv variants) occurs in Proverbs for contentious persons or acts of contention (Prov 18:18-19; 21:19; 23:29; 25:24; 26:21; 27:15). Also in Ps 80:6 where God makes Israel an object of contention among neighbors, Jer 15:10 of Jeremiah's lament, and Hab 1:3 of violence and strife in society. 22×
