Entrance, doorway; the setting of the sun (westward); the act of coming in or arriving
A noun derived from the root bo' (to come, enter), mavo' denotes the place where one enters -- a gate, doorway, or passage into a building or city (Judg 1:24; 2 Kgs 11:16). When paired with shemesh (sun), it takes on a directional meaning: the place where the sun 'enters' the horizon, i.e., the west or sunset (Ps 50:1; 104:19). Spanish 'puesta de sol' and French 'coucher de soleil' both capture this sunset sense distinctly from the architectural meaning. Occasionally it functions as a verbal noun describing the act of arriving or entering (Ezek 33:31).
1. entrance or doorway — The physical entrance or doorway into a defined space -- a city gate (Judg 1:24-25), a temple threshold (2 Kgs 16:18), or a guardroom passage (1 Chr 9:19). English glosses 'entrance of' and Spanish 'entrada de' consistently render this spatial, architectural sense across translations. 13×

2. setting of the sun — The going-down or setting of the sun, and by extension the direction west. Psalm 50:1 pairs 'from the rising of the sun to its mavo'' as a merism for all the earth. French 'coucher de' and Spanish 'puesta de' highlight the astral meaning that English 'entrance of' can obscure. 8×

3. act of coming in — The act or event of coming in, used as a verbal noun. In 2 Samuel 3:25 Abner's 'coming in and going out' is scrutinized as intelligence; in Ezekiel 33:31 the people's 'coming' to the prophet is habitual. Spanish 'entrada tuya' (your entering) preserves the active, processual quality. 4×
