1. encampment, settlement Feminine noun denoting an encampment, settlement, or walled enclosure, from the root idea of surrounding or enclosing (cf. Syriac 'sheepfold'). Used of the nomadic encampments of Ishmael's descendants (Gen 25:16), the encampments of the Midianites destroyed by Israel (Num 31:10), the settlements of the Kedarites (1 Chr 6:54), and the camps of the Philistines in Ezekiel's prophecy (Ezek 25:4). Also used of the desolate camp of the enemy as a sign of divine judgment (Ps 69:25).

2. battlement, row Architectural sense denoting a battlement, parapet, or row of stones atop a wall. Used of the battlement of silver built upon the beloved in the Song of Solomon (Song 8:9), and of the rows or courses of the temple structure in Ezekiel's vision (Ezek 46:23). This sense extends the enclosure meaning to fortified architectural features rather than tent-encampments.
