temple, sanctuary; palace, royal residence
1. temple, sanctuary The sacred temple building, whether Solomon's temple in Jerusalem or a pagan temple, denoting the main hall or nave of a religious edifice where worship and sacrifice occur. The multilingual evidence strongly converges on sacred-space vocabulary: spa 'el templo' (the temple), arb 'الهَيْكَل' (the temple/sanctuary), kor '성전' (holy hall/temple), swa 'hekalu' (temple, from Heb heykal), hin 'मंदिर/मन्दिर' (temple). Covers all prepositional and construct forms referring to the sacred building.

2. palace, royal residence A grand secular building, specifically a king's palace or royal residence, representing the well-attested polysemy of heykal which denotes both sacred temple and royal palace (cf. Akkadian ekallu 'great house'). The multilingual evidence clearly distinguishes this from the temple sense: arb 'قَصْرِ/قَصْرِي' (palace/my palace), swa 'jumba la kifalme/jumba langu' (royal palace/my palace), spa 'el palacio/mi palacio' (the palace/my palace), kor '궁전' (palace), hin 'महल/अपने महल में' (palace/in my palace). Used of Babylonian and other royal residences in Daniel and other contexts.
