1. sinew, tendon — An anatomical term for a sinew or tendon, the fibrous tissue connecting muscle to bone. Hebrew gīd is cognate with Aramaic gīdā. Its most notable occurrence is in the 'sinew of the hip' (gīd hannāsheh) in Genesis 32:33, the sciatic nerve/tendon that was displaced when Jacob wrestled, giving rise to a dietary prohibition. Also used in Job 10:11 for sinews as part of bodily structure, Job 40:17 for Behemoth's sinews, Ezekiel 37:6,8 in the valley of dry bones vision, and Isaiah 48:4 metaphorically for stubbornness ('your neck is an iron sinew'). 7×
